Family holiday in Libya

Travel writer John Gimlette travelled with us to Libya over the Xmas and New Year. Just emailed to say he’d had a fantastic trip and how the much the Libyan people loved children – he took along his 3 year old daughter. Looking forward to seeing the article.

UPDATE: John Gimlette’s article is now published here.

Yes, it’s true, we had a fabulous Christmas with Audley in Libya. It exceeded expectations on every front; the food was better than we’d imagined (especially the sea food); the accommodation was great, and the people were charming. It was one of the best trips we’ve had for ages.

And, yes, it was great for our toddler, Lucy. For a child of three, it was all endlessly exciting; camels; eating on cushions; the fishmarket; the funny little alcove she slept in; the ruins; the souks; walks along the corniche, and carriage rides around Tripoli. But best of all were the Libyans themselves. They cannot resist children, and even the police gave Lucy a cuddle. In the souks, they heaped her with little presents, and she was given more chocolate thn she’s ever seen before. Restaurants seemed to love the idea of children (unlike some places I can think of …) and she was thoroughly spoilt wherever she went.

Chief spoiler was our guide, the wonderful Shukri. Lucy still talks about him, and she still has a little stash of presents he gave her.

… and from a practical side, Libyan travel was easy; there was plenty of simple food available for her; fish, rice, crusty bread; fruit; yoghurt … We never seemed to lack anything.

Finally, there was a spin-off benefit for us. Having a child with us was a great ice-breaker. People engaged us very readily, and seemed to think that the presence of a child tourist indicated that libya had truly come in from the cold …

A fabulous experience. Thanks to all the team at Audley, and to their agents in tripoli …
