From April 23rd to May 31st, the steamy port city of Manaus will host the 13th famous ‘Festival Amazonas de Ópera’, this year paying homage to France’s contributions to the world of opera and featuring only works by French composers and artists.

The setting for the festival is unique and exciting. Manaus is a hot and bustling city in the heart of the tropical Amazon rainforest and yet the opera house itself would not be out of place in Paris or Rome. A jewel of the Amazon, it was built during the ‘Belle Époque’, in a Renaissance style and financed by the rubber boom. Its architecture is beautiful and delicate, a fine mix of marble, wood and gold ornamentation.

This year’s festival will feature performances of the great works of Debussy, Chabrier, Poulenc and Berlioz as well as well as recitals and special concerts of Brazilian composers and artists influenced by French music of the 20th and 21st centuries.

In the build up to the festival, numerous free events and outdoor concerts take place across Manaus giving everyone in the city and all its visitors access to this wonderful musical extravaganza.

    Please can you tell me if there are any performances in the Manaus Opera House on 11 & 12 November 2009?

    I asked our Brazil specialists and received the following answer: “Unfortunately, the Manaus Opera House only schedules one month in advance.

    Sundays are always the safest bet. But if you are available on both evenings (11th and 12th November), I’d say there is a very good chance of you seeing an opera”.

    I will be in Manaus end of May. I saw that there is a performance of OS TROIANOS – Hector Berlioz on May 28 that I would love to see.
    Do you know how I can make reservations for tickets?

    Hi Thomas,

    I have asked the Brazil specialists for you and was told:

    “He can email the opera house: taingressos@culturamazonas.am.gov.br but I think tickets are only sold in the ticket office of the opera house itself so he may have to end up buying them locally”.

    I’ve been to Manaus last month. Beautiful city, I was upset they didn’t let us inside the Opera, I think it was a sunday and maybe that’s why.
    But eh, we’ve been to “Meeting waters” trip and that was astonishing ! A 1hr flight with a small plane completed the journey, I love Manaus !
