Asian elephant conservation campaign kicks off in the capital
Elephant Parade 2010 is a conservation initiative that aims to highlight and support the crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant.
250 model elephants, each one individually designed and painted by a different artist or celebrity, have been scattered throughout central London in a bid to raise awareness of the plight facing the Asian elephant due to habitat loss. In the past 100 years, Asian elephant numbers have declined by 90%, and it is thought that this number will continue to fall due to the growing conflict between people and the elephant population.
The organisers of the campaign aim to raise £2 million for the Asian elephant along with various worldwide charities that are working to save this threatened species. A public auction of all 250 model elephants will take place towards the end of the initiative in July this year.
