Lions return to Malawi for the first time in 30 years

Lions in Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Some of the breeding pairs of lions will come from Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Malawi isn’t a safari destination on the scale of say, Kenya or Zambia, but it does have several good parks and reserves in the south of the country where you can see a good range of big game – all except that is, lion.

Since the 1980′s Malawi hasn’t been a Big Five safari destination but this will change in August when four lions from South Africa are introduced into one of the country’s largest protected areas, Majete Wildlife Reserve.

The costs of moving the two pairs of male and female lions from South Africa is being sponsored by Robin Pope Safaris, who own and operate the luxury Mkulumadzi Lodge in Majete, one of our most popular properties for guests visiting the area.

The reintroduction of lions will once more render Malawi a big five destination, as it already boasts the other four: elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard.
