Blogging Guide

What is a blog?
A blog is an online journal, often offering online commentary or news on a certain subject. Most blogs are created and edited by individuals, although more organisations are starting to use blogs as a source for communication and dialogue with customers and clients.
An important aspect of blogging is the social interaction - most blogs invite comments and discussion on each article posted. Articles also commonly link to other blogs on the same subject, creating a network of opinion with many authors involved.
RSS and syndication
RSS, or really simple syndication, is a system used by many blogs to syndicate content. RSS feeds are mostly used by FeedReaders, which can check many syndication feeds and present the most recent articles from many blogs in one convenient place - feedreaders can either be on the web (such as Bloglines, NewsGator, Google Reader) or software you can download to your computer (such as FeedDemon, NewsFire).
Creating your own blog
There are many free sites that provide blogging services. At Audley, we recommend Wordpress, a free service regarded by many to be the best. The Wordpress system can also be downloaded from wordpress.org, installed on your own site and heavily customised. Wordpress has a handy overview of the benefits of the free service vs the downloadable software.
